The groom suit is the one garment you will see again in hundreds of photos for decades. That is why choosing a wedding suit should never come down to whichever colour is in fashion. Style, cloth, colour and ordering time need to be decided together, around your wedding schedule, the venue and your partner’s attire.

Since 1949, the master tailors of Laxmi Tailors have made suits for grooms in Jakarta. This guide brings together everything we discuss in a first consultation, so you can make your decisions calmly, well ahead of the big day.

1. Start with Your Schedule: Akad, Blessing and Reception

Many Jakarta weddings take place in two parts: the akad nikah (the Islamic marriage ceremony) or a church blessing in the morning, followed by an evening reception, sometimes on a different day. Each moment asks something different of your groom suit.

  • Morning (akad or blessing): a lighter suit, comfortable through the ceremony, in a soft colour that complements the bride’s attire.
  • Evening (reception): a tuxedo or dinner jacket with satin-faced lapels, made for ballroom lighting, cameras and a long night.

If you need two outfits, both can be cut from the same personal pattern. They look coordinated, and your fittings can cover both at once.

2. Groom Suit Styles for the Akad and the Reception

Jakarta grooms most often choose one of three main styles, plus the beskap for a Javanese akad. The best choice depends on the time of the event, the level of formality and the temperature of the venue.

Two-piece suit

A jacket and trousers in the same cloth. The most versatile option, suitable for the akad, an engagement or a semi-formal reception. After the wedding, it is also the easiest to wear again for work or other events.

Three-piece suit

Jacket, trousers and waistcoat. The waistcoat gives a more complete look and stays neat when you take the jacket off during the event. This style is popular for church blessings and garden weddings.

Tuxedo

A black tuxedo with satin peak lapels, bow tie and cufflinks: the black-tie standard for an evening reception.

Its signatures are satin-faced lapels (peak or shawl), covered buttons and a satin stripe down the trouser leg. The tuxedo is the black-tie standard, which makes it the right choice for an evening reception in a hotel ballroom. Laxmi Tailors makes bespoke tuxedos and dinner jackets in black and midnight blue, including the tuxedo for Joe Taslim at Gold Gala 2026.

Single breasted or double breasted?

A single-breasted jacket has one column of buttons down the centre, usually one or two. It is the most versatile and gives a slimmer silhouette, so it suits most grooms. A double-breasted jacket has two overlapping columns of buttons. It looks bolder and more classic, ideal for a formal reception or a groom who wants a more commanding presence in photos.

Choose your lapel: notch, peak or shawl

The lapel sets the character of your groom suit. The notch lapel has a small cut-out and is the most common choice for two-piece and three-piece suits. The peak lapel points up towards the shoulder, adding formality and broadening the shoulders. The shawl lapel is a smooth curve without a notch and is the signature of the tuxedo or dinner jacket for an evening reception. At Laxmi, you decide the lapel, the number of buttons, the back vents and even the lining colour together with your tailor.

Beskap and traditional attire

For an akad in the Javanese tradition, some grooms choose a beskap. If you plan to wear a beskap for the akad and a suit or tuxedo for the reception, mention it at the first consultation so the colours and cloths can be coordinated.

3. Choose a Colour to Match the Time and Theme

The colour of your groom suit should follow the time of the event and your partner’s palette, not the other way round.

Time and settingColours we recommend
Morning akad or blessingCream, light grey, soft blue
Garden or beach weddingIvory, sage green, dusty blue, lilac
Evening ballroom receptionBlack, midnight blue

Some of the groom suits from our ateliers, such as a sage green three-piece matched to the bride’s gown or a lilac three-piece for a beach wedding, show that soft colours still look formal as long as the cut is right. Bring a photo or a fabric swatch of your partner’s attire to the consultation, so your tailor can match the tones directly.

4. Choose Fabric for Your Venue

In Jakarta, the cloth of your groom suit decides whether you stay comfortable all evening or overheat by the first photo session.

  • Air-conditioned ballroom: a weightier wool and satin-faced tuxedo cloth keep their shape under the lights and cameras.
  • Garden or outdoor: lightweight Italian wool and breathable blends stay comfortable in the Jakarta heat.

Laxmi offers hundreds of imported cloths from mills such as Loro Piana, Dormeuil, Holland & Sherry, Vitale Barberis Canonico and Cerruti. To understand cloth weight and weave in more depth, read our suit fabric guide for tropical climates.

5. Make Sure the Fit Is Right

The camera shows every crease. Shoulders that are too wide, a collar that stands away or sleeves that are too long are obvious in close-up photos. This is the main reason grooms choose a bespoke suit: the pattern is drawn from scratch to your measurements and posture, then refined over 2-3 fittings.

The six fit points we always check, from the shoulders to the trouser length, are explained in our article 6 rules for a perfectly tailored suit.

6. Groom Suit Ordering Timeline

The most common mistake is ordering too close to the wedding. Here is the timeline we recommend:

  1. At least 2 months before the wedding: consultation, measurement and cloth selection. The first consultation and measurement are free.
  2. Tailoring in 7-14 working days (Bespoke Classic) or 1-2 months (Bespoke Handmade): the pattern is drawn to your posture, then the cloth is cut and sewn.
  3. 2-3 fittings: shoulders, waist and lengths are refined step by step.
  4. About 1 week before the event: final fitting, then your suit is ready to collect.

If you choose Bespoke Handmade, sewn entirely by hand, start even earlier, since the tailoring alone takes 1-2 months. The extra time also leaves room if your measurements change before the wedding.

Only a few weeks left? Consider our tuxedo rental service as an alternative.

7. Don’t Forget the Groomsmen and Both Fathers

Family photos look far more polished when the groom, groomsmen, both fathers and even the ring bearer share one colour palette. Laxmi tailors the whole party as one coordinated set, with an individual fit for every person and special pricing for group orders. Tell us the number of people at the first consultation so the schedule can be planned together.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start ordering a groom suit?

Start at least 2 months before the wedding. A Bespoke Classic groom suit takes 7-14 working days and Bespoke Handmade takes 1-2 months, with 2-3 fittings and a final fitting about one week before the event. If you choose Bespoke Handmade, start even earlier.

Which groom suit colours work for the akad and the reception?

For a morning akad nikah or church blessing, soft colours such as cream, light grey and soft blue feel light and complement the bride’s attire. For an evening reception, black and midnight blue look most elegant under ballroom lighting.

Should I wear a tuxedo or a suit for my wedding?

A tuxedo is the right choice for a black-tie evening reception. For the akad, a morning blessing or a garden wedding, a two-piece or three-piece suit in a lighter cloth is usually more comfortable and better suited to the setting.

How much does a bespoke groom suit cost at Laxmi Tailors?

A Bespoke Classic suit starts from IDR 9,000,000 and a Bespoke Handmade suit, sewn 100% by hand, starts from IDR 18,000,000. Prices include the cloth. The final price depends on the cloth and details you choose and is confirmed after the consultation, before work begins.

Can Laxmi tailor suits for the groomsmen and both fathers?

Yes. Laxmi Tailors makes suits for the groom, groomsmen and both fathers as one coordinated set, with an individual fit for every person. Special pricing applies to group orders.

Which fabric suits a wedding in Jakarta?

For an air-conditioned ballroom, a weightier wool and satin-faced tuxedo cloth keep their shape under the lights. For a garden or outdoor venue, lightweight Italian wool and breathable blends stay comfortable in the Jakarta heat.
